Anabolic steroids

Anabolic steroids explained for Canadians: what each compound is, how it works, the side effects, the bloodwork to ask for and the law.

Anabolic steroids in Canada: the basics

What they are

Anabolic-androgenic steroids are synthetic versions of testosterone. They bind to androgen receptors in muscle and other tissues, which increases protein synthesis and nitrogen retention. Doctors prescribe some of them, mainly testosterone, for low testosterone, delayed puberty and muscle wasting.

The risks

Outside medical use the main risks are to the heart (cholesterol, blood pressure, a thicker heart muscle), the liver (mostly with oral steroids), hormones and fertility (your own testosterone production shuts down), mood, skin and, for women, voice and body hair changes that can be permanent. Each guide covers the risks of that compound.

Bloodwork

Anyone considering steroids should get bloodwork before, during and after: a complete blood count, lipids, liver and kidney function, and hormones (testosterone, LH, FSH, estradiol). Your family doctor can order these, or you can book private testing at LifeLabs or Dynacare.

The law in Canada

Anabolic steroids are Schedule IV under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. Personal possession isn’t an offence, but trafficking, importing and exporting without authorization are. Post-cycle therapy drugs are prescription drugs, and SARMs aren’t approved by Health Canada.

These guides are general information, not medical advice, and they don’t give personal doses or cycles. For a one-paragraph summary of every compound, see the compound profiles. Ordering questions are in the FAQ.
