What is Deca Durabolin?
Nandrolone is testosterone with one carbon removed (19-nortestosterone). That small change makes it more anabolic and less androgenic than testosterone. Deca-Durabolin, nandrolone with a long decanoate ester, was introduced in 1962 and used for:
- Anemia caused by kidney failure, by stimulating red blood cell production
- Muscle wasting, including in HIV
- Postmenopausal osteoporosis
Erythropoietin largely replaced it for kidney-related anemia, and medical use has declined, but its effects are well documented.

- Less hair loss than testosterone, because nandrolone is converted to a weaker androgen (DHN) by the same enzyme that turns testosterone into DHT
Clinical reference doses
For anemia caused by kidney failure, the historical label dose was 100 to 200 mg a week for men and 50 to 100 mg a week for women. For osteoporosis, doses were lower and spaced every three weeks. There’s no approved dose for muscle building.

Suppression and libido
Nandrolone shuts down natural testosterone deeply. On its own, that can leave testosterone very low, causing poor libido, erection problems and low mood, nicknamed “Deca dick”. Heart and blood
Lower HDL cholesterol, higher blood pressure and higher hematocrit, which together raise cardiovascular strain. Long-term nandrolone use has also been associated with thickening of the heart muscle.

Nandrolone aromatizes far less than testosterone, but water retention and gynecomastia can still occur.
Detection time
Nandrolone metabolites can be detected in urine for many months after the last injection, much longer than most steroids. If you compete in tested sport, including in Canada under the CCES, this is decisive.
