How it works

Yohimbine blocks alpha-2 adrenergic receptors, which normally act as a brake on fat release and adrenaline.

  • Fat release: blocking alpha-2 receptors, which are dense in hip, thigh and belly fat, makes it easier for stored fat to be released.
  • Insulin blunts it: the effect is strongest when insulin is low, which is why it’s usually taken fasted.
  • More adrenaline: it raises noradrenaline, behind both the energy boost and the side effects.

Its effect lasts a few hours. One small study in athletes found a modest drop in body fat over three weeks; it’s not a substitute for diet.

Side effects and risks

Yohimbine’s side effects come quickly and are dose-related.

Anxiety and panic

Nervousness, jitteriness and panic attacks are common, especially in people prone to anxiety.

Heart rate and blood pressure

Both rise. Palpitations, chest pain or a pounding headache mean stop.

Sleep

Insomnia if taken later in the day.
