- Primobolan is methenolone, a DHT-derived steroid with mild androgenic effects and no conversion to estrogen.
- It comes as an injectable (enanthate) and an oral (acetate). The injectable is far more common in Canada.
- It’s popular for lean, gradual gains and cutting, but it still suppresses natural testosterone and affects cholesterol.
- It’s one of the most counterfeited steroids, because genuine methenolone is expensive to make.
Primobolan has a reputation as the gentle, “clean” steroid, helped by stories of famous bodybuilders who used it. It is milder than most, but mild is relative. This guide explains what methenolone is, how the two forms differ, what it can and can’t do, and the risks Canadians should know about.
What is Primobolan?
Methenolone is a derivative of dihydrotestosterone (DHT). It was developed in the early 1960s and marketed as Primobolan (oral methenolone acetate) and Primobolan Depot (injectable methenolone enanthate). It was used to treat conditions such as anemia and muscle wasting, and in some countries it’s still available as a medicine. It isn’t marketed in Canadian pharmacies.
Because it’s DHT-based, it doesn’t convert to estrogen. That means no estrogen-driven water retention or gynecomastia, which is a large part of its appeal.
Enanthate vs acetate
| Methenolone enanthate (injectable) | Methenolone acetate (oral) | |
|---|---|---|
| Half-life | About 5 days | A few hours |
| Dosing | Once or twice a week | Daily, often split |
| Liver | Gentle | Not 17-alpha-alkylated, so milder than most orals |
| Availability | More common | Rare and expensive |
What it does
- Slow, lean muscle gain with little water
- Muscle and strength retention while dieting
- Fewer estrogen-related side effects than testosterone
It’s considered weaker per milligram than testosterone, which is why users often expect more than it delivers.
Side effects
- Suppression: it lowers natural testosterone and sperm production. Used alone, it can also leave estrogen too low, affecting libido, mood and joints.
- Cholesterol: HDL falls, though usually less than with oral steroids.
- Hair loss and acne in people prone to them, as with other DHT derivatives.
- Women: milder virilization than most steroids, but voice deepening, facial hair and clitoral enlargement are possible and can be permanent.
Why fakes are common
Methenolone is more expensive to make than most steroids, so underground products are often underdosed or contain a cheaper compound instead. Independent lab testing and your own bloodwork are the best checks. Our guide to verifying a Canadian source explains how.
Bloodwork in Canada
Check a lipid panel, liver enzymes, complete blood count, testosterone and estradiol before and during use, and testosterone, LH and FSH after. Book through your family doctor or privately at LifeLabs or Dynacare.
Is Primobolan legal in Canada?

Frequently asked questions
Is Primobolan mild?
Milder than most steroids, because it doesn’t convert to estrogen and is less androgenic. It still suppresses natural testosterone and lowers HDL cholesterol.
Is Primobolan good for cutting?
It’s used mainly to keep muscle and strength while dieting, with little water retention.
Why is Primobolan so expensive?
Methenolone is costlier to produce than most steroids, which is also why it’s often faked.
Is oral Primobolan hard on the liver?
Oral methenolone acetate isn’t 17-alpha-alkylated, so it’s milder on the liver than most orals, but it’s rare and expensive.
Is Primobolan legal in Canada?
It’s Schedule IV under the CDSA. Personal possession isn’t an offence; trafficking, importing and exporting without authorization are.
