- Dianabol (methandrostenolone) is the original performance oral, developed in the 1950s for American weightlifters.
- It adds size and strength fast, much of it water, because it converts readily to estrogen.
- Its short half-life (about 3 to 6 hours) means levels rise and fall within a day.
- It’s hard on the liver and blood pressure, so it’s used for short periods and needs bloodwork.
Dianabol is the steroid most associated with the golden era of bodybuilding, and it’s still one of the most popular orals in Canada. It works quickly and visibly, which is exactly why its side effects are easy to underestimate. This guide covers its history, what it does, the risks, and what to know before buying it.
What is Dianabol?
Methandrostenolone (also called metandienone) is a modified form of testosterone. It was developed by Ciba in the late 1950s, with the involvement of US team physician John Ziegler, who wanted American weightlifters to compete with Soviet athletes using testosterone. It was briefly prescribed for conditions such as delayed growth and osteoporosis before medical use faded.
Like most orals, it’s 17-alpha-alkylated so it survives the liver, which also makes it liver-toxic. Unlike Anavar or Winstrol, it converts to estrogen (via an especially potent form, 17-alpha-methylestradiol), which drives much of its water retention.
What users report
- Rapid weight gain, often several kilograms in the first weeks, much of it water and glycogen
- Quick strength gains and strong pumps
- A “full”, smoother look, as opposed to the dry look of DHT-derived orals
- Some of the weight is lost after stopping, as water drops
Short half-life
With a half-life of about 3 to 6 hours, blood levels peak and fall within the same day, which is why daily amounts are often split. Its short action also means side effects ease quickly once it’s stopped.
Side effects
Liver
Raised liver enzymes are common, and long use of this class of drugs has been linked to cholestasis (bile flow problems), peliosis hepatis and liver tumours. Dianabol is usually used for short periods for this reason. See our liver guide.
Blood pressure and water retention
Water retention and estrogen effects can push blood pressure up quickly. Check it regularly; free machines are in most Canadian pharmacies. Our blood pressure guide explains what’s normal.
Gynecomastia
Because it aromatizes into a potent estrogen, breast tissue growth is a real risk, especially in men prone to it.
Cholesterol, skin and suppression
- Lower HDL and higher LDL cholesterol
- Acne and oily skin
- Suppressed natural testosterone and sperm production
Bloodwork in Canada
Check liver enzymes, a lipid panel, blood pressure, estradiol, testosterone and a complete blood count before and during use. Ask your family doctor for a requisition, or book privately at LifeLabs or Dynacare.
Is Dianabol legal in Canada?
Methandrostenolone is an anabolic steroid, listed in Schedule IV of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. Possessing it for personal use isn’t an offence; trafficking, importing and exporting without authorization are.
