How it works
- Mimics LH: hCG binds the LH receptor on the testes’ Leydig cells, which make testosterone.
- Keeps the testes active when outside testosterone has switched off your own LH.
- Lasts about a day or more: a half-life of roughly 24–36 hours, so two or three injections a week are typical.
Side effects and risks
Low doses are usually well tolerated; problems mostly come with high doses.

Dosing information
Clinical reference. For men with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, labels give 1,000–2,000 IU two or three times a week. To preserve fertility on testosterone, studies have used about 500 IU every other day.

Mixing math. Adding 5 ml of bacteriostatic water to the 5,000 IU vial gives 1,000 IU per ml, so every 10 units on a U-100 syringe is 100 IU:
- 250 IU = 25 units
- 500 IU = 50 units
If the vial can’t hold 5 ml, use 2 ml (2,500 IU per ml): 500 IU = 20 units.
