- Almost every oral steroid is 17-alpha-alkylated, which lets it survive the liver and makes it hard on the liver.
- The mildest common orals are Anavar and Turinabol; the harshest are Anadrol, Superdrol, Halotestin and metribolone.
- Orals that convert to estrogen (Dianabol) or act like it (Anadrol) cause water retention; DHT-derived orals don’t.
- Orals hit cholesterol harder than most injectables. HDL drops are the most consistent side effect across the class.
Oral steroids are convenient: no needles, no injection technique, and effects that start and stop quickly. They also bring specific risks, mostly to the liver and cholesterol. This guide ranks the orals sold in Canada from mildest to harshest and compares them on what matters, so you can understand the trade-offs before choosing.
Why orals are different
Most oral steroids carry a 17-alpha-methyl group. Without it, the liver would break the drug down before it reached the bloodstream. With it, the drug survives, but the liver takes the strain. That’s why orals are usually used for shorter periods than injectables and why liver bloodwork matters more. Orals also tend to lower HDL cholesterol more than injectable testosterone. Our injectable vs oral guide explains the full trade-off.
The orals compared
| Oral | Main use | Water retention | Liver strain | Half-life |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Anavar | Cutting, lean gains, women | Low | Lower | ~9 to 10 h |
| Turinabol | Lean, steady gains | Low | Moderate | ~16 h |
| Proviron | Supporting androgen | None | Low (not 17-alpha) | ~12 h |
| Winstrol | Cutting, dry look | Low | Moderate to high | ~9 h |
| Dianabol | Fast size and strength | High | High | ~3 to 6 h |
| Anadrol | Fastest size and strength | High | Very high | ~8 to 9 h |
| Halotestin | Strength, aggression | None | Very high | ~9 h |
| Superdrol | Dense, dry size | Low | Very high | Short |
| Metribolone (oral tren) | Extreme potency | Low | Extreme | Short |
The mildest: Anavar and Turinabol
Anavar (oxandrolone) was prescribed for decades to help patients regain weight, and Turinabol is a chlorinated Dianabol that doesn’t convert to estrogen. Both give steady, lean gains with little water. “Mild” still means lower HDL, liver enzyme changes and suppressed natural testosterone.
The middle: Winstrol and Dianabol
Winstrol gives a dry, hard look but is among the worst for HDL cholesterol and is linked to joint complaints. Dianabol gives fast, full-looking gains with plenty of water, and it raises blood pressure and liver enzymes.
The harshest: Anadrol, Superdrol, Halotestin and metribolone
Anadrol is the strongest common bulking oral and one of the most liver-toxic. Superdrol (methyldrostanolone) was sold as a “supplement” in the mid-2000s until regulators acted, and medical journals have published cases of serious cholestatic liver injury linked to it. Halotestin is mainly a strength drug with heavy liver strain. Metribolone, sold as “oral tren”, is extraordinarily potent at tiny doses and so liver-toxic that clinical development was abandoned.
Never combine two 17-alpha-alkylated orals. Liver strain adds up, and the harshest orals are risky even alone.
What about “beginner orals”?
Older advice suggested starting with an oral to avoid needles. Most experienced users and harm-reduction resources now say the opposite: injectable testosterone is the best-studied and most predictable starting point, and orals carry more liver and cholesterol risk per week of use. Our first cycle guide covers what to consider.
Monitoring for any oral
- Liver enzymes (ALT, AST, GGT) and bilirubin before, during and after
- Lipid panel: HDL is the number to watch
- Blood pressure several times a week
- Testosterone and a complete blood count
Ask your family doctor or book at LifeLabs or Dynacare. All of these orals are anabolic steroids under Schedule IV of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act: personal possession isn’t an offence; trafficking, importing and exporting without authorization are. Frequently asked questions
What is the mildest oral steroid?
Anavar is generally considered the mildest common oral, followed by Turinabol. Both still affect cholesterol, the liver and natural testosterone.
What is the strongest oral steroid?
For size and strength, Anadrol and Superdrol; metribolone is the most potent per milligram and the most dangerous.
Are oral steroids worse than injectables?
Most orals are harder on the liver and cholesterol than injectable testosterone, which is why they’re used for shorter periods.
Is Clenbuterol an oral steroid?
No. Clenbuterol is a beta-2 agonist, not a steroid. See our clenbuterol guide.
