- BCAAs (leucine, isoleucine, valine) are three of the nine essential amino acids.
- On their own, they can’t build muscle; your body needs all nine essential amino acids.
- If you eat enough protein, extra BCAAs add little, whether you’re natural or on a cycle.
- Whey or a complete protein is a better buy for most Canadians.
BCAAs have been a gym staple for decades, often sipped during training. The research has moved on. This guide explains what they do, why they rarely add anything when protein intake is adequate, and the narrow cases where they might help.
What BCAAs are
Branched-chain amino acids are leucine, isoleucine and valine. Leucine is the main trigger for muscle protein synthesis, which is why BCAAs were marketed for muscle growth.
The problem
Muscle protein synthesis needs all nine essential amino acids. BCAAs can switch the process on, but without the other six there’s nothing to build with, so the response is small and short-lived. Studies comparing BCAAs with complete protein consistently favour complete protein.
When they might help
- Training fasted with no other protein for many hours
- Very low protein diets (better fixed by eating more protein)
- As a flavoured drink that helps you drink more water, which is a legitimate if minor benefit
On a steroid cycle
Steroids increase how efficiently muscle uses amino acids, but they don’t create a special need for BCAAs. Total daily protein (about 1.6 to 2.2 g/kg) is what matters. See our bodybuilding meal plan.
Better options
| Option | Why |
|---|---|
| Whey protein | Complete, high in leucine, usually cheaper per gram of protein than BCAAs |
| Milk, Greek yogurt, eggs | Complete protein from food |
| EAA supplements | All nine essential amino acids, if you want a drink |
| Creatine | Far better evidence for strength and size |
In Canada, look for a Natural Product Number (NPN) on supplements, which shows Health Canada has reviewed the product. See also creatine vs steroids.
Frequently asked questions
Do BCAAs build muscle?
Not much on their own. Muscle building needs all nine essential amino acids, which complete protein provides.
Should I take BCAAs on a cycle?
There’s no special need. Hitting your daily protein target matters far more.
Are BCAAs good for fasted training?
They may help slightly if you train fasted with no recent protein; a small protein meal or EAAs is better.
What’s better than BCAAs?
Whey or another complete protein, and creatine for performance.
