- Within Canada, personal possession of anabolic steroids isn’t an offence, and you can fly with injectables and syringes if you follow screening rules.
- Crossing any border is different. Exporting from Canada or importing into another country without authorization is an offence in Canada and in most destinations.
- The United States treats anabolic steroids as Schedule III controlled substances. Bringing them in without a US prescription is illegal.
- If you have a prescription, carry it in the original pharmacy-labelled container with a copy of the prescription.
Whether it’s a work trip to Vancouver, a winter week in Mexico or a family visit across the border, steroid users and men on testosterone therapy eventually have to decide what to do with their supply when they travel. The rules depend almost entirely on whether you cross a border. This guide covers domestic flights, the US border and international travel, for both prescription testosterone and non-prescribed steroids.
This is general information, not legal advice. Laws change and enforcement varies; check the official rules for your destination before you go.
Flying within Canada
Domestic flights don’t involve customs. Security screening at Canadian airports is run by the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA), whose job is finding threats to aviation, not checking prescriptions.
- Personal possession of anabolic steroids isn’t an offence under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, so carrying your own supply on a domestic flight isn’t itself illegal.
- Liquids: medication in a carry-on is exempt from the 100 ml liquid limit, but you should declare it at screening. Vials under 100 ml can also go in your liquids bag.
- Syringes and needles are allowed in carry-on when you’re also carrying the medication they’re for. Keep them capped and together.
- Checked bags are simplest for anything you won’t need in flight, but keep vials padded and in the original box to avoid breakage.
Carrying many vials, or packaging that looks like it’s for sale, invites questions about trafficking. Take what you need for the trip.
Crossing into the United States
This is where most problems happen. In the US, anabolic steroids are Schedule III controlled substances under federal law. Bringing them into the country without a valid US prescription is illegal, and US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers can search your bags, seize the drugs, fine you and refuse entry. A record of a drug-related refusal can make future US travel much harder.
Leaving Canada with steroids also counts as exporting a Schedule IV substance without authorization, which is an offence under Canadian law, even if nobody checks on the way out.
Don’t take non-prescribed steroids across the US border. If you’re mid-cycle, plan the trip around it or stop before you travel.
With a Canadian prescription
If you’re on prescribed testosterone, US rules generally let travellers bring a personal supply of their own medication. Carry it in the original pharmacy-labelled container with your name, bring a copy of the prescription or a doctor’s letter, and declare it to CBP. Bring only what you need for the trip.
Travelling internationally
Rules vary widely. Some countries treat anabolic steroids as prescription medicines; others treat them like other controlled drugs, with serious penalties. Before you travel:
- Check the destination government’s rules on bringing in prescription and controlled medication. The Government of Canada’s travel advice pages for each country are a good starting point.
- Contact the destination country’s embassy or consulate if your medication is controlled there.
- Travel with prescribed medication only, in original labelled packaging, with a copy of the prescription.
Coming home to Canada
When you return, declare medication to the CBSA. For prescription drugs, Health Canada generally allows travellers to bring in up to a 90-day supply, or a single course of treatment, for personal use, in the original labelled packaging. Buying steroids abroad and bringing them home without a prescription counts as importing.
Practical alternatives
- Time your use around travel. Long-acting esters like testosterone enanthate and cypionate are injected once or twice weekly, so a short trip often needs nothing at all.
- Get a prescription if you qualify. If you have symptoms of low testosterone, a Canadian doctor can test you and prescribe testosterone, which makes travel straightforward. See our TRT in Canada guide.
- For longer stays in Canada, ordering to where you’ll be is simpler than carrying. Domestic orders ship anywhere in Canada by Xpresspost.
Frequently asked questions
Can I fly with testosterone in Canada?
Yes. Personal possession isn’t an offence, and medication and the syringes for it are allowed in carry-on. Declare liquids over 100 ml at screening.
Can I bring steroids to the US from Canada?
Not without a valid prescription. Anabolic steroids are Schedule III in the US, and exporting them from Canada without authorization is also an offence here.
Do I need to declare my testosterone prescription at the border?
Yes. Declare it, keep it in the original pharmacy-labelled container and carry a copy of the prescription.
Can I mail steroids to myself while travelling?
Mailing across a border is importing or exporting, which is an offence. Within Canada, ordering to your destination is the simpler option.
